Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian & Bertrand Chamayou
Pictures at an Exhibition
What happens when Russia and France meet in music? The acclaimed Gürzenich-Orchester Köln invites us to find out. In his captivating ballet Gayaneh, Soviet composer Aram Khachaturyan painted a portrait of the Armenian soul in which the famous ‘Sabre Dance’ and other evergreens reflect influences from Central Asian folk music.
Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is another example of Russian storytelling at its most inspired. Maurice Ravel orchestrated this piano cycle, enveloping it in the velvety chromatic palette of French Impressionism. In honour of the Ravel year, you will also hear his sensitive Piano Concerto in G, with the renowned Bertrand Chamayou at the keyboard. Master of ceremonies of this symphonic feast is the young conductor Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.
