Alexander Malofeev
In the Mists
Born in 2001 and already top of the bill: the term ‘child prodigy’ seems to have been invented for musicians like Alexander Malofeev. Even at 14, the Russian pianist amazed all those who heard him play with his musicality and technical talent. Today, his CV reads like a triumphant tour of the world's most illustrious venues.
But anyone expecting this young powerhouse to storm the stage with volcanic repertoire is on the wrong track: with a surprisingly mature recital programme, Malofeev proves that you don't need words to tell stories. The titles of Leoš Janáček's dark piano cycle In the Mists and Liszt's elegiac Funérailles speak volumes. They are presented alongside a Fantaisie by Aleksandr Skrjabin and Franz Schubert's rarely performed Drei Klavierstücke.
