il Pomo d'Oro & Maxim Emelyanychev
St John Passion
The St. John Passion is often referred to as Johann Sebastian Bach's only ‘opera’. With his inimitable sense of drama, the composer brings the story of Christ's suffering intensely to life. The overwhelming opening chorus ‘Herr, unser Herrscher’ sets the tone for a series of choruses, chorales, arias, and recitatives that draw the listener deep into the Gospel narrative. This time, bass Will Thomas plays the role of Jesus, with Bach tenor par excellence Thomas Hobbs as the Evangelist. Leading the ensemble il Pomo d'Oro is Maxim Emelyanychev, acclaimed worldwide as one of the most inspiring conductors of the moment. He will undoubtedly make Bach’s masterpiece sound like you've never heard it before.
