Simply Quartet
Poems for Strings
Opposites complement and elevate each other: a timeless truth in Chinese philosophy and the foundation of the Simply Quartet’s unique approach. This young international ensemble brings a fresh perspective and expansive repertoire to the stage. Their programme features Rebecca Clarke’s Poem for String Quartet, a sweeping work by the British composer; Creole Contradanzas from Wynton Marsalis’s first string quartet, evoking the vibrant old New Orleans; and, finally, Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No. 1, inspired by his song Spillemænd, where minstrels are granted musical talent by a water spirit – in exchange for their happiness. As the composer himself described it, the piece strives towards breadth, soaring flight and above all resonance. Grieg’s quartet blends lofty Romanticism with folk-inspired rhythms, weaving between orchestral richness and moments of intimate focus on each player.
