about
The Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini is a living legend. In 1960, at the age of 18, he won the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, one of the world's oldest piano competitions. "These young people play better than any of us," commented Arthur Rubinstein, one of the jury members.
With his characteristic independence, Pollini did not initially commit to pursing the career of international pianist but continued to study for a number of years to refine his technique and broaden his repertoire. From the mid-1960s, he began to perform around the world with conductors such as Karl Boehm, Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado and Pierre Boulez. The works of Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin constitute the heart of his repertoire, while he also champions the works of 20th century composers including Berg, Schönberg and Weber. Contemporaries such as Luigi Nono, Giacomo Manzoni and Salvatore Sciarrino have also written new works for him.
Today, aged 80 and with a playing style that is more refined than ever, Maurizo Pollini performs exclusively on his own piano. He plays a Steinway with modifications by the Italian piano maker Fabbrini that lend the instrument greater dynamic possibilities and more distinct crystalline tones. An experience that is not to be missed!
