Danish String Quartet
Doppelgänger I
The members of the Danish String Quartet are bound not only by their love for music but also by a shared fondness for beards, vintage cars, and other quirky passions. These close-knit friends are as comfortable with the classical canon as they are with folk music.
Their international project DOPPELGÄNGER pairs world premieres by celebrated composers with essential works from the chamber repertoire of Franz Schubert. This time, the focus is on Danish composer Bent Sørensen, whose music navigates a fascinating path between Romanticism, atonality, and polyphony. Sørensen drew inspiration from Schubert’s final string quartet, a dynamic clash of major and minor, light and shadow. The quartet also arranged Schubert’s haunting song ‘Der Doppelgänger’ from the Schwanengesang cycle, set to Heinrich Heine’s text, where a man passes by his former lover’s home only to see a tortured figure at the door: his younger self.
