Stabat Mater
In the 13th-century hymn Stabat Mater, Mary mourns her dying son on the cross. If the Latin original already pierced the heart, Jozef Janowski's Polish translation cuts even deeper. Composer Karol Szymanowski turned it into an overpowering work for choir, orchestra and three soloists. In doing so, he made a unique contribution to an age-old tradition: his Stabat Mater is coloured by rhythms and melodies from Polish folk music.
Alongside this masterpiece, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra places Szymanowski's Fourth Symphony, and two compositions by compatriots: the Suita for string orchestra by Grażyna Bacewicz and the Ciaconna that Krzysztof Penderecki added to his Polish Requiem in 2005. This full-length ode to Polish music is conducted by Marin Alsop, one of today's most visionary conductors.
