‘Who can say what the world is? The world is in flux, therefore unreadable, the winds shifting, the great plates invisibly shifting and changing.’ – Louise Glück, Averno

Averno, a crater lake in Italy, is said to be the portal to the underworld. This is where the realms of the living and the dead meet. Louise Glück's book of poetry of the same name was the inspiration for The Rise, a new performance by composer Eva Reiter and choreographer Michiel Vandevelde.

Ruben Grandits, a young deaf performer, narrates the story. Using sensors, his sign language is converted into sound, which soprano Lore Binon and four musicians then set to work with. They play instruments designed by Eva Reiter for the occasion. Four dancers retranslate this acoustic world into movement. From this echo of gestures and sounds, a unique chorus emerges that gradually becomes a new community. Here, the fantasy of a pure, direct language gives way to a multiplicity of worlds and perspectives.
