Equinox - spring traditions around the world
celebrate spring with five concerts during the Equinox weekend
In cooperation with Bozar, Klarafestival organises EQUINOX for the first time, a spiritual weekend in which spring rituals from different cultures resound. The programme includes PASSIO (a performance by Muziektheater Transparant and director Luigi De Angelis), the Teheran-born singer Homayoun Shajarian, the tabla and sitar legend Pandit Nayan Ghosh, the Dutch-Finnish trio Peltomaa Fraanje Perkola and the Corsican ensemble A Filetta.
St john passion
On the occasion of this Christian ritual of spring, Muziektheater Transparant and B’Rock present a performance of the rarely-performed St John Passion by Alessandro Scarlatti. The director Luigi de Angelis will be adding a visual component in the form of a video installation that lies somewhere between a baroque still life and a contemporary documentary.
Homayoun Shajarian
The famous singer Homayoun Shajarian from Iran has a passion for Iranian classical music that is matched by his love of pop and rock music. His music combines exceptional sophistication with an emotional intensity.
late night concert
The Dutch-Finnish trio Peltomaa Fraanje Perkola immerse the listener in an esoteric and timeless sound bath. With viola da gamba, medieval harp, the human voice and electronic sound effects, they blend Finnish folk songs and music from the Middle Ages with jazz and contemporary compositions.
maestro presents the next generation
Pandit Nayan Ghosh is a phenomenon. The legendary Ravi Shankar described him as one of the best Indian musicians ever. Pandit Navan Ghosh is exceptional in that he plays both the tabla and the sitar – two very different instruments – with equally mastery.
a filetta feat. Paolo Fresu
With a homogenous mix of heritage and experimentation, the voices of A Filetta explore the Corsican polyphony of their homeland, weaving it into other genres and music traditions. At Klarafestival, they will forge a dialogue with the virtuoso bandoneon player Daniele di Bonaventura and jazz trumpeter Paolo Fresu.
