Maestra Lacrymae

Launching our collaboration with RendezVous

Classical meets visual art during Brussels Art Week

Sparked by a shared fascination for new forms, makers and original cross-pollinations, Klarafestival will be joining forces with RendezVous, the organisation behind Brussels Art Week. From 10 through 13 September the bustling Brussels art scene will come together for a four-day event full of exhibitions and happenings, at no fewer than 100 locations scattered around the capital.

On 12 September at 7 PM, visual artist Anastasia Bay and interdisciplinary artist Joseph Schiano di Lombo will present their double LP Maestra Lacrymae in a musical performance with piano at Salon de RendezVous. The project involved developing the musical aspect of Bay’s earlier exhibition into a fully-fledged opera. It tells the story of five archetypical figures, inspired by mythology, commedia dell'arte and James Ensor’s Christus' Intrede in Brussel in 1889 (Christ's Entry Into Brussels in 1889). Schiano di Lombo brings Bay’s colourful, baroque characters to life in a mix of antique poetic forms, opera, spoken word and electroacoustic music.

This first performance is the initial step in a longer-term collaboration between Klarafestival and RendezVous. After all, both organisations share the ambition to make Brussels a place where music and visual art don’t simply accidentally rub shoulders but actively reinforce one another.
