Benjamin Glorieux

on the road with bach

A landscape as a score

benjamin glorieux follows in the footsteps of j.s. bach

Between 7 and 15 December, cellist and maker Benjamin Glorieux went on a very special trip. With his cello on his back, he braved the cold and literally followed in the footsteps of J.S. Bach.

Just as the baroque master walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck in 1705 to hear his great hero Buxtehude play, Benjamin trod the same route. He did that in preparation for his concert during Klarafestival 2023: on 11 March he will take on the challenge of playing all Bach’s cello suites in a single day.

The six suites served as the rhythmic thread during his walks: “While I heard the music in my head or played it live, I collected observations, ideas and insights that will shape my live performance in March.” Video artist Klaas Verpoest will also set to work with these observations. He will create a 3D world that depicts the journey both internally and externally. As a viewer, it is as if you are walking alongside him to the flow of the music.

Curious about the result? Reserve your seat for the concert on 11 March now. What’s more, throughout the Klarafestival you can visit the antechamber that Emilie Lauwers set up especially for the occasion in the council room at Bozar.

At the start of his journey, Klara presenter Olav Grondelaers gave Benjamin a quick call. Enjoy the wonderful landscape with them.
